Creating a page template

You can create a page template within Templates so when you want to create a brand new page version, you can select this page template to reduce the time it takes and steps made to set up a new page version within your site.

For example, say you always use the same header and footer component group on all your pages (see the creating a component group article for more information. You can create a page template that includes these. So, when you create a new page version, they're already added to the page version, saving you time. Or, if you always have a Markdown component on your page, you could create a page template that has this in the Main section.

A page template needs to be created in Templates before you can use it across your pages. Click Templates on the dashboard and then follow the steps below to create a page template:

  1. Select Page templates and click + New page template

  1. Input a name for your page template and then click Save

  1. Click + New page version in the Page versions section

  1. Input a Page version name and click Save

  1. Add component groups, layout elements, or Frontastic components that you want to reuse across multiple pages, Preview your page, and then click Save

  1. Hover on the name of your page template version in the Draft section, click more icon, and select Make default

Using a page template

Now you've created a page template, you can now use it when creating a page version in the site builder.

Create a page version by clicking New then Create page version (see the creating a page version article if you haven't done this before).

In the dropdown list for Layout, you'll now see the name of your page template under the page template header, which you can select.

The page builder will open when you click Save. Here, you'll see that the page is set up just as you created it within your page template. You can now add and remove layout elements and Frontastic components as you wish as well as editing any components for the individual page.

Editing a page template

Once you've saved a page template, you can edit it at any time.

Go to Templates, click on the name of your page template within the page template section, then click the edit icon on the name of your page within the Page versions section.

The page builder will open and you can edit the layout elements, components, and their configurations as you'd like to. Preview your page, then click Publish.

🚧

Any page version you've already created with your page template won't update with these changes. A page version is created independently from the page template, so it's not synced once it has been created.

Deleting a page template

To delete a page template, hover on the name of your page template within the Page template section and click the trash can icon. This will delete it straight away. As any page using the template was saved and modified separately, it won't affect these pages in any way.
